City Breaks Ground on Future-Focused PowerTLH EV Charging Station
June 19, 2025
The City of Tallahassee is driving our community toward a clean energy future by providing reliable, cost-effective, zero-emission electric vehicle charging stations. Slated to open in 2026, the City's first Level 3 DC Fast Charging station—featuring the fastest and most powerful EV charging technology commercially available—will be capable of charging four vehicles simultaneously, delivering a full charge in as little as 20 minutes. This bold infrastructure expansion will make it easier for residents and visitors to power up and stay on the move, supporting cleaner transportation and a greener community.
"A cleaner, more connected Tallahassee is on the horizon. Our investment in innovative, sustainable services is a key reason the City has been named a 2025 All-America City finalist. Environmental stewardship is central to our strategic priorities, and I'm proud of the work underway—not only to meet the needs of our community today, but to anticipate and prepare for the needs of tomorrow," Mayor John Dailey said.
The City of Tallahassee has long been a leader in environmentally sustainable practices, setting the pace for municipal innovation. In February 2019, the City Commission voted unanimously to adopt the Clean Energy Resolution, which set ambitious benchmarks to move the City toward a more sustainable future. In August 2023, the City Commission voted unanimously to approve its Clean Energy Plan — a guide to achieve net 100 percent renewable energy by 2050. For the City, sustainability means meeting today's needs while protecting our environmental, economic and social resources for generations to come. Our ongoing investments are delivering powerful results.
As of February 2025:
- Electric and hybrid City fleet vehicles have logged nearly 6.2 million miles, avoiding more than 5.5 million pounds of CO₂ emissions—the equivalent of planting over 41,250 trees.
- 33 percent of the City's light-duty fleet is now electric or hybrid.
- 42 percent of the City's StarMetro bus fleet has transitioned to battery-electric buses, improving air quality and public transit efficiency.
"Expanding electric vehicle charging infrastructure is essential to meeting our community's future needs, starting today. As we transition to cleaner technologies, electric charging stations are the gas stations of the future," City Manager Reese Goad said. "By building public zero-emission vehicle charging hubs, we're not only preparing for tomorrow's transportation needs but also promoting energy efficiency throughout our community."
Modern and inviting, the City of Tallahassee's first-of-its-kind electric vehicle charging station blends innovation with convenience. Located at 233-1 W. Van Buren Street, adjacent to Anita Favors Plaza, the station offers more than just a place to charge. Drivers can enjoy a stroll along the scenic Capital Cascades Trail, explore the History and Culture Trail along FAMU Way or unwind at Lake Anita and Cascades Park. A variety of local businesses are also just a short walk away, making it easy to experience the area while your EV powers up.
To celebrate the start of construction for the new EV charging station, the community is invited to a groundbreaking event on Tuesday, June 24, at 10 a.m. at the project site, 233-1 W. Van Buren Street.
